Blast from the Past:

The Fascinating Journey of a Homeless Drug Dealer to Business School

You know how adcoms want to see how you overcame “adversity” in your application? Get a load of this story.

The story begins with a freshman stepping onto campus in 1992. Like many students, he started experimenting with drugs. Soon enough, he was kicked out of school and became hooked on crack cocaine. He even dealt drugs on the unforgiving streets of South Chicago to feed his habit. After watching a friend bleed to death from a stabbing, he entered a halfway house. A few years later, he graduated from college and ran his own business for a dozen years. In 2014, he was slated to graduate from the University of Iowa’s Tippie School of Business and start work at Wells Fargo.

That’s the life of Srinivas Rao in a nutshell. In an exclusive interview with Poets&Quants, the 39 year-old Rao looks back on his life. From homelessness to fatherhood, he shares how he’s applied his lessons to his business life and education. And he looks ahead to life after graduation. Looking for a feel-good story? Check out our talk with Rao below.
