The former Dean of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management has received one of Canada’s highest civilian honors. Roger Martin, who led the Rotman School from 1998 to 2013 as dean, was named as a Member of the Order of Canada for his leadership in business education and for his innovative studies in corporate management. The appointment was announced by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on June 30.

An iconoclastic leader who has been outspoken about the need for change in business education, Martin was named Dean of the Year in 2013 by Poets&Quants for transforming the institution from a small, irrelevant Canadian B-school to a legitimate global player. Under Martin’s leadership, the school saw a dramatic growth in the size of its programs, faculty, facilities, and international reputation. Rotman has been ranked as Canada’s number one business school for ten years in a row by the Financial Times. In addition, the school’s faculty was ranked third in the world for research by the Financial Times in January. In September 2012, a new building expansion was officially opened that more than doubled the amount of teaching, research, study, presentation, and special event space available to the Rotman School community.

“A brilliant strategist, a creative thinker, and a tireless educator, Roger Martin transformed the Rotman School into a leading brand in management education and research, renowned for innovative programs and thought leadership on the most pressing problems of our time,” current Rotman School Dean Tiff Macklem says in a statement.

INTEGRATIVE THINKING & BUSINESS DESIGN WERE KEY DIFFERENTIATORS FOR ROTMAN

Martin is currently director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the Rotman School, where he leads The Infrastructure of Democratic Capitalism project. He also holds the Premier’s Chair in Productivity & Competitiveness.

His research work is in Integrative Thinking, Business Design, Strategy, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Country Competitiveness. He has written 23 Harvard Business Review articles and published 10 books: Getting Beyond Better (with Sally Osberg), Harvard Business Review Press (HBRP), 2015; Playing to Win (with A.G. Lafley) (HBRP, 2013); Fixing the Game (HBRP, 2011); The Design of Business (HBRP, 2009); The Opposable Mind (HBRP, 2007); The Responsibility Virus (Basic Books, 2002); Canada: What It Is, What It Can Be (with Jim Milway, Rotman-UTP Publishing, 2012); Diaminds (with Mihnea Moldoveanu, University of Toronto Press, 2009); and The Future of the MBA (with Mihnea Moldoveanu, Oxford University Press, 2008). In addition, he co-edited Rotman on Design (with Karen Christensen, Rotman-UTP Publishing, 2013).

A Canadian from Wallenstein, Ontario, Martin received his AB from Harvard College, with a concentration in Economics, in 1979, and his MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1981.

Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. The Order recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country. More than 6,500 Canadians have received appointments to the Order since its inception.
