• Unless you can give me some evidence that Gupta’s ethical weakness has somehow in some way affected the quality of ISB’s program than it seems your only point is that ISB has indirectly received some bad publicity recently. So it has. You seem to be confusing the misdeeds of these people in their consulting careers [...]

  • Yes sir, thanks for deciding that for everyone. I’ll spread the word. Any other pronouncements?

  • According to the Financial Times (March 9): “Mr. Gupta resigned as chairman of the ISB on Tuesday.”

  • Meaning what? That he should step down from ISB? Perhaps. That prospective applicants should shun ISB? For what reason? If Nitin Nohria committed high crimes and misdemeanors that had nothing to do with his role at HBS, Harvard Business School’s status as an object of applicant desire would be completely unaffected.

  • Good point. :) And Anil Kumar is a product of Wharton and M. Rammohan Rao a product of Carnegie-Mellon and Cornell University. No one seriously believes that Harvard or Wharton’s attractiveness to MBA applicants is diminished by the ethical lapses of their bad apples.

  • Yes, I debated whether to mention that. The fact is that ISB has experienced similar scandals in its leadership before this and survived them. That may be because the ethical missteps of these leaders–including Gupta–did not involve the school or the quality of its program. Is anyone suggesting that ISB should start offering more courses [...]

  • For a business school that was little more than an idea ten years ago, the Indian School of Business has come a very long way. First conceived in the late 1990s with the explicit goal of becoming “an internationally top-ranked, research-driven, independent management institution that grooms future leaders for India and the world,” ISB has [...]

  • Thumbnail Andrew wanted to get into Stanford, but I told him he wasn’t being realistic. His 700 GMAT was fine, but didn’t compensate completely for his mediocre GPA in college, his hardly electrifying profile (IT guy with a major consultancy), and his fine but unremarkable extracurricular credentials. Then Andrew told me his story. Raised in one [...]

  • Thumbnail Make no mistake. Of all the essays you’ll write for your business school application, the goals essay is the most important. It’s the one essay in which schools most explicitly ask you to answer the central question that underlies your entire application—why exactly do you need an MBA? Not surprisingly, it’s also the essay that [...]

  • Thumbnail Once you have your self-marketing handle, you have the multipart message that should inform all your essays for every school (albeit with some tweaking here and there to match particular schools’ emphases). Now you need to find the best specific stories that illustrate that message. Unlike medical and law schools, which often give you carte [...]

  • Thumbnail Imagine you’re at a tony cocktail party where you find yourself competing with the best and brightest of your peers to make a lasting impression on your welcoming but overworked hosts. You’re all splendidly accomplished, well-rounded types, but you know your influential hosts are only likely to remember a handful of you when the evening’s done. When [...]

  • Thumbnail This is the season when most MBA applicants are frantically trying to complete their applications for their target schools. You probably already have your GMAT or GRE done and are now wrestling with your essays. It’s important to remember that when admissions committees must choose between equally qualified super-achievers, nothing helps them more…[Read more]

    Explaining Employment Gaps

Admittedly, it’s hard to spin current unemployment in a positive way, but the circumstances behind your jobless situation can have a mitigating effect and should usually be explained. For most schools, joblessness of under, say, two months need not be given the full treatment of an optional essay. If you were terminated…[Read more]

  • “Cozy” is not at all the word I would use to describe the atmosphere at the AIGAC conference in Boston. Many of the admissions directors in attendance were forthright in their concerns regarding consultants. There was some tension in the air, but a healthy tension that in my opinion benefits both “sides.” The emerging relationship [...]

Writing Ethics Essays for MBA Admissions
Many applicants paranoiacally assume that the ethics essay is designed to put their morals to some stringent litmus test. They brainstorm for examples that show them proudly refusing bribes, pointedly excusing themselves from insider-trading deals, or sternly rejecting other blatantly illegal schemes. They…[Read more]
