The W. P. Carey School, not to be confused with the Carey School at Johns Hopkins University, is a highly innovative and aggressive player in the business school arena.
Its full-time MBA is a two-year program that includes three 10-week trimesters each year. Most students enroll in three to five courses per trimester. Core business courses are taken primarily in the first year of the program. During the last trimester of the first year, students select from a number of specialization or elective offerings. The program requires students to select a specialization in one of five areas. Students may pursue two specializations, depending on course scheduling.
To further support career goals, students complete a required internship during the summer between the first and second year of the program. Finally, in the second year, Carey MBAs continue with courses in their selected specialization. Additional elective courses may be taken to build knowledge in other areas, to select a second specialization, or to complete an area of emphasis.

Rankings Analysis: The W.P. Carey School held steady in 2012, maintaining its rank of 46th place in the Poets&Quants analysis. The story behind that surface stability is more oddly mixed. The 2011 Forbes biennial ranking, which measures full-time MBA programs solely on the basis of return-on-investment, downgraded the school ten places to a rank of 66th from 56 two years earlier. And the school completely fell off The Financial Times’ list in 2012 after having placed as the 64th best school in the world and 32nd in the U.S. But what those two rankings took away, The Economist helped to make up. The Economist hadn’t ranked at all in 2011 but in 2012 ranked the school the 35th best in the U.S. and the 59th best in the world.
BusinessWeek, which ranked the school 49th in 2010, gave the school the same ranking in 2012.
