Brand Yourself With An MBA ‘Brag-Storm’

don draperBlast from the Past:

What if Don Draper Had an MBA?

The 60s are drawing to a close. And Sterling Cooper has transitioned from cigarettes to candy. The men still fake their way through the day, consuming cocktails and bedding beatniks…no different than a decade earlier. And the women remain mostly stuck in the typing pool; the ambitious smack up against the glass ceiling while the rest wrestle with the age-old question” “Is that all?”

Still, the setting has shifted from the silent sufferers of Updike’s suburbia to the haunted victims of Hubert Selby’s dystopian mean streets.  As we enter the final season of Mad Men, we learn how little the world has changed. Before computers, there were typewriters. Before the internet, there was television and radio. And there were always defiant children, broken marriages, crushed dreams, and a tension between our longings and our comforts.

Through it all, we’ve witnessed Don Draper, a master pitchman and a negligent father, who inspires awe and antipathy alike. Lost, afraid, and angry, he may not have learned from his betrayals. But he knows how to play on our aspirations. Question is, could he actually run Sterling Cooper? If not, how could an MBA help him round out his skill sets?

MBA Humor

A businessman was interviewing applicants for the position of divisional manager. He devised a simple test to select the most suitable person for the job. He asked each applicant the question, “What is two and two?” The first applicant was a journalist. His answer was “twenty-two.” The second applicant was an engineer. He pulled out a calculator and showed the answer to be between 3.999 and 4.001. The next person was a lawyer. He stated that in the case of Jenkins v. Commr of Stamp Duties (Qld), two and two was proven to be four. The last applicant was an accountant. The businessman asked him, “How much is two and two?” The accountant got up from his chair, went over to the door, closed it then came back and sat down. He leaned across the desk and said in a low voice, “How much do you want it to be?” He got the job.
