Blast from the Past:

Why Clubs Should Factor Into Your Business School Decision

“I learned more on the basketball court than I ever did in class.”

Sound familiar? Whether you performed on a field or a stage, you probably learned your biggest lessons outside the curriculum. If you sang with the show choir, you acquired an aptitude for precision and fulfilling a role. If you played sports, you developed a competitive mindset that helped you persevere through adversity. Chances are, extracurriculars were your first exposure to leadership, to guiding others and following a plan.

In business school, the principle is the same. Sure, you can learn the technical nuts-and-bolts through exercises. And you can weigh the merits of various leadership styles through case studies. In the end, you’ll never internalize these lessons until you practice them. And that’s why clubs are such a big draw to MBAs. Call them a “social training ground,” a dress rehearsal where you can stretch yourself in a low stakes setting.

Maybe that’s why extracurriculars are sometimes referred to as the “glue” that holds an MBA community together. It is a chance to build relationships and gain know-how from like-minded peers (and alumni). Not to mention, it shows recruiters that you’re passionate and engaged member of the b-school community. So how can you make the most of the club experience? Check out Poets&Quants’ exploration of extracurriculars at the top b-school programs below.
