Without a doubt, the business analytics master’s is the belle of the specialty degree ball. Roughly a third of the top 100 business schools have rolled out these programs, in response to fast-rising demand for workers trained to wrangle and analyze the big data streams that are getting bigger by the second. For companies of virtually any size in any industry, the mining and processing of big data is a do-or-die proposition.

“Business analytics is determining the winners and losers in most industries,” Kenneth Gilbert, an emeritus prof at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Haslam College of Business, told Forbes. “Ford cites analytics as playing a major role in its turnaround. Many companies such as Amazon, Google and Capital One have built their entire business model around analytics. Companies that see this are looking for the talent needed to integrate business analytics into their business strategy.”

Now, there’s no need to go as ga-ga over the data science revolution as did the Harvard Business Review, which titled an article on business analytics “Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century.” The HBR article highlighted the fact that the field is growing faster than the output of trained data scientists. “Much of the current enthusiasm for big data focuses on technologies that make taming it possible, including Hadoop (the most widely used framework for distributed file system processing) and related open-source tools, cloud computing, and data visualization,” the article says. “While those are important breakthroughs, at least as important are the people with the skill set (and the mind-set) to put them to good use. On this front, demand has raced ahead of supply. Indeed, the shortage of data scientists is becoming a serious constraint in some sectors.”

Here’s a great list to start exploring a master’s in business analytics. For the first time, we’re compiled a list of the programs at Poets&Quants‘ Top 100 business schools, ranked by their full-time MBA programs. The halo effect from a flagship program brings prestige to the business school brand that covers all their other business offerings.
