Stanford Graduate School of Business today (July 21) named Maureen McNichols to Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, effective September 1. McNichols, an accounting professor who has served as area coordinator for the school’s accounting group, is the second female member of the GSB’s four-member senior leadership team under new Dean Jonathan Levin. It is the first time in the school’s history that two women will have held the title of senior associate dean.

Before Levin took over on Sept. 1 of last year, he had also named Sarah Soule, a highly likable professor of organizational behavior who had been co-director of the Center for Social Innovation, to oversee oversee executive education, global innovation programs and finance. As the senior associate dean for academic affairs, McNichols will assume a role that is often perceived to be a stepping stone to a full deanship. Garth Saloner, who preceded Levin as dean, had once had the same job before becoming dean of the GSB in 2009.

McNichols succeeds Glenn Carroll, who will return to a faculty position after nine years in the senior associate deanship. McNichols ’s portfolio will include CIRCLE (Centers and Initiatives for Research, Curriculum & Learning Experiences), case writing, oversight over the political economy and marketing faculty groups, and the Behavioral Lab, which is becoming part of CIRCLE. This latest change now leaves only one holdover from the previous administration’s senior leadership group: Paul Pfleiderer, who has been a senior associate dean for the past four years, and has taught finance at the GSB for the past 36 years.

‘A WONDERFUL SOURCE OF INSIGHT OVER THE PAST YEAR’

Maureen McNichols has been named a senior associate dean at Stanford GSB

Beginning her tenure as an assistant professor in 1984, McNichols career has flourished at Stanford and she currently holds the title of Marriner S. Eccles Professor of Public and Private Management. She has served as as chair of the FAB Executive Committee, as a member of the University Budget Group, and as a member of the Stanford Board of Trustees Finance Committee, among many other activities at the GSB and Stanford.

“Maureen has been a wonderful source of insight for me over the past year and has a deep understanding of both the GSB and the university. I look forward to her joining my leadership team, and I’m excited about the perspective she will bring as a Senior Associate Dean,” said Levin in a statement.

McNichols joined Stanford University in 1983, just before earning her PhD in accounting from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign in 1975 and in 1976, respectively.
