MBA Handicapping: When White Males Should Retake The GMAT

When should white males retake the GMAT? Sandy Kreisberg, founder of HBSGuru.com, says “almost always,” especially when your current score is a 710.

That’s the case for Z. A financial analyst, he works in business development for a petroleum company after having spent more than a year in corporate finance at a minerals company. He’s hoping to use an MBA to change careers to land a job in marketing analytics, preferably the business side of sports.

He has a GPA of 3.78 from Rice University where he had majored in economics and sports management. He did well on the GMAT, scoring a 710, but is targeting Chicago Booth, NYU Stern, Duke Fuqua, and UCLA Anderson for its MBA studies.

HANDICAPPING YOUR MBA ODDS

That’s 21 points shy of Booth’s average for last year. Six points below Stern, nine points under Anderson’s average, but a half dozen points over Fuqua’s average (see Average GMAT Scores At The Top 50 Business Schools).

The obvious question: Should Z retake the test? In this Fridays With Sandy episode, HBSGuru.com Founder Sandy Kreisberg says that when a white male scores a 710 and wants into an elite MBA program he should almost always retake the GMAT and aim for a higher score. Find out why in the video above.
