Vice President of Medical Affairs with a Clinical Documentation Improvement Company. What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career? Becoming a physician executive is the achievement I am most proud of in my professional career. Through this role, I have been able to bridge the divide between the clinical and corporate teams. Continuing my education and receiving my MBA was instrumental in obtaining this goal. Why did you choose this school’s online MBA program? As a medical doctor, I had no previous education in the business world. I felt that if I wanted to continue in a leadership role and advance in my career, I needed to obtain formal training. The MBA program with JWMI was the ideal opportunity to gain the expertise and tools that I needed to grow. What was your favorite part of being in an online MBA program? My favorite part of being in an online MBA program included a high level of flexibility available. I was able to review coursework in my “downtime” and apply the knowledge the very next day. I frequently would utilize course materials and assignments to solve critical issues I was dealing with in my career. The online format allowed me to pace myself but also to build on the work I had already completed. The curriculum was ideal in that I could reflect on previous lessons and grow in my understanding of the concepts with the new material. I was able to apply this knowledge while honing my skills. What was the most surprising thing about an online learning environment? I was amazed that I was able to engage at a profound level with my professors and other students. The connections that I made fostered constant learning from the experiences and viewpoints of others. The fact that I did not feel isolated and “remote” was a massive surprise for me as I had never participated in online learning previously. How did your online experience compare with your in-the-classroom experience as an undergraduate student? The online experience challenged me to engage actively. Compared to undergraduate learning, I was no longer just a number in a large classroom; I was an individual. I was treated like a true colleague by my professors, which gave me further motivation to succeed. What is your best piece of advice to an applicant for thriving in an online MBA program? My best piece of advice to an applicant for an online MBA program is to treat the program as an extension of your current job. As a student, if you can apply existing problems facing you in your career to your assignments and readings, your knowledge will multiply significantly. Your classmates and professors are invaluable resources and can drive an impressive level of performance. What would you change about an online MBA Program? I felt that the online MBA program was ideal for my needs and did not need much adjustment. Keeping up with the changing times is required, and quality online education is crucial. There have been opportunities to network with others in a novel program that is growing, and I predict it will continue to expand within JWMI. How has your online education helped you in your current job? My education with the Jack Welch Management Institute MBA program was vital in creating my leadership approach. It changed the way I managed my teams and projects. I received new opportunities since participating in the program. The fact that I now have the knowledge and understanding of multiple areas of the business world, in addition to my medical education, has been remarkable. What is your ultimate long-term professional goal? My ultimate long-term professional goal is to motivate and mentor others with energy, passion, and enthusiasm in any healthcare-related field I lead.
