P&Q’s Must Reads: Consulting Pay: What MBAs Earned In 2022

Hello everyone  — Welcome back to Poets&Quants’ Must Reads, a quick, digestible recap of the top business school news, sponsored by CentreCourt, P&Q’s virtual admission events.

I’m your host, Kristy Bleizeffer, and I’ll be highlighting the most important P&Q stories you might have missed. So, let’s get to it.

No. 1: Consulting Pay: What MBAs Earned In 2022

Management Consulted, a hub for industry insiders that racks consulting industry salaries along with other metrics, released its 2023 salaries overview last week, and it isn’t all rosy. The hub notes that rapid MBA salary rises in the industry are starting to correct themselves. Cutback are coming.

In its analysis, Management Consulted believes that the next wave of cuts will involve either shrinking project team sizes or opting to hire less expensive non-MBA talent. At the same time, it anticipates M&A consolidation will result in “a fragmented market of boutique players”.

No. 2: Indiana & UNC Top U.S. News Ranking Of Best Online MBA Programs

Two major players in the online MBA market retained their hold on first place in the 2023 U.S. News Online MBA ranking published today (Jan. 24). Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School share top honors in the new ranking. The online MBA program at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School, which was in a three-way tie for first place last year, slipped into third place.

Interestingly, while online MBA students now outnumber those enrolled in on-campus programs, the explosive growth in the Online MBA market is pretty much over. Three of the Top Ten schools, in fact, reported enrollment declines, with the University of Arizona down to 359 online MBA students compared to 418 a year ago.

No. 3: Sloan Fellows: An Elite Mid-Career Degree At 3 World Class B-Schools

What do Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan, former BP CEO and chairman Lord John Browne of Madingley, and Boeing chairman Frank Shrontz have in common? They are all Sloan Fellows – a unique graduate business program for mid-career professionals. It is counted among the most prestigious business degrees in the world.

Poets&Quants dove deep into each of the Sloan programs, talking to students and faculty to try to get a taste of the secret sauce. You can find the story now in our news tab.

No. 4: Our Weekly Round Up of  News You Can Use

No matter where you are in your MBA journey, we bring several helpful stories for you this week.

First up: More schools are making overtures to laid off tech and other workers in an increasingly shaky economy. Northwestern Kellogg has extended its test waiver through Round 3 for tech workers laid off in the last six months. Dartmouth Tuck, meanwhile, is offering test waivers for any laid-off worker – not just those in text. And for all those finance guys out there contending with layoffs, Fortuna Admissions tells you how to turn that layoff into an MBA admission. You can find all these stories on our homepage.

Next: For MBA hopefuls preparing for upcoming interviews, here’s an article you can’t afford to miss: 2023 MBA Interview Questions, a School-by-School List. You’ll find it on our homepage.

Finally: If you’re looking for an MBA program to help secure that lucrative job at the other end, check out our story on how executives at top companies rank the best programs.  CEOWORLD, a magazine aimed at C-suite executives, asked its in-the-know readers to evaluate schools that help respondents land the job. You can find the story in our news tab.

And, that’s it for this week’s Must Reads recap.
