MBA Apps At Yale SOM Jump 21.5% by: Marc Ethier on September 16, 2024 | 1,827 Views September 16, 2024 Copy Link Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email Share on LinkedIn Share on WhatsApp Share on Reddit Applications to the MBA program at Yale SOM exploded in 2023-2024 Another top-10 U.S. business school, another big rebound in MBA applications. Yale School of Management, ranked No. 5 in the U.S. by Poets&Quants, saw a 21.5% jump in applications to its MBA program in 2023-2024, the second top-10 B-school to report a major turnaround in apps after years of declines. Yale’s 3,738 apps in the last cycle were a huge rebound from the 3,076 for the MBA Class of 2025, and the highest total since the Ivy League school received nearly 3,900 for the Class of 2023. The result: Yale increased its class size to 347 from 339 and dropped its acceptance rate — which last year was its highest-ever at 33% — by more than 17%, to just over 27%. The school increased its yield, as well. The app windfall had several noteworthy effects, particularly in leading to a class in which 56% identify as students of color, up from 48% last year — even as those identifying as under-represented minorities declined slightly to 16% from 18%. Yale’s MBAs are younger this year, at an average age of 26.5, than they have been in many years, and they have slightly less work experience than their predecessors. Twelve percent identify as LGBTQ, down from 13%, and 20% are first-generation college students, a big jump from 16% in the Class of 2025. Some key metrics were down, however. The new Yale class is 39% women, dropping the school below the 40% threshold for the first time since the fall of 2020, when the first coronavirus pandemic intake had the same level of female representation. Amid a widespread downturn in international apps (more than offset, in Yale’s case, by a surge in domestic interest), the school saw its international cohort decline slightly from 50% to 48%, while the number of countries represented in the class dropped to 42 from 46 — the latter metric once again representing a low mark since the Covid-19 pandemic. Those taking the GMAT Focus, which by a scoring quirk yields lower average overall, reported a median score of 675. Those taking the Graduate Record Exam (37% of the class, same as last year), reported an average and median verbal score of 164 and an average and median quant score of 166. The overall average of 330 was a point higher than last year. Average undergraduate GPA ticked up to 3.65 from 3.63, and median was also up, to 3.68 from 3.65.
