Johns Hopkins Carey Is Going All-In On AI

Johns Hopkins’ business school is embracing artificial intelligence with a slate of programs — new offerings as well asMORE

With a full- or part-time Master of Science in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, full- or part-time Master of Science in Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business, and AI for Business certificate program, the Carey Business School is going all-in on AI.

“Artificial intelligence is already reshaping our lives and the ways we conduct business with promises to make our lives easier and more efficient,” Carey Dean Alex Triantis says. “Today’s business graduates will be in the driver’s seat leading this AI revolution across a new business landscape. At Carey, we are preparing students to seize these opportunities, while remaining focused on the human element and how these new technologies will impact people.”

BECOMING THE NEXT AI EXPERTS

The Carey School is no AI newcomer. It has had a core AI course for MBA students — Data Science: Artificial Intelligence, taught by Tinglong Dai — since 2021. Its trio of “new” offerings are only partly new: The Master of Science in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence full- and part-time programs were formerly known as the Business Analytics and Risk Management programs, and the full-time Master of Science in Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business was formerly known as the Master of Science in Information Systems.

Truly new are the part-time Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business, as well as the AI for Business certificate program.

Whether full- or part-time, degree or certificate, Carey’s programs seek to give students unique experiential learning and practice-based approaches to help them become the next AI experts.

“Through Carey’s hands-on approach, students cultivate not only a profound mastery of complex AI methodologies but also the acumen to apply these tools strategically and innovatively across a multitude of business environments,” says Naser Nikandish, business analytics and artificial intelligence academic program director and Carey associate professor of practice.

TWO-THIRDS OF EMPLOYERS IN SURVEY: WE WON’T HIRE SOMEONE WITH NO AI SKILLS

Among the most attractive aspects of Carey’s AI programming is the opportunity to participate in Amazon Web Services Academy, a program with cloud computing curriculum “that helps students pursue industry-recognized certifications and careers in the cloud. Many employers consider AWS Certifications prerequisites for cloud computing roles,” the school says in an announcement. “According to AWS, their certifications are the highest paying category of certifications, with an average salary for certified professionals above six figures.”

The benefits in being well-versed in AI and cloud computing go beyond salary: These skills may be essential to finding work in a rapidly changing employment landscape. According to a 2024 Work Trend Index report from Microsoft and LinkedIn, 66% of leaders say they wouldn’t hire someone without AI skills, and 71% say they’d rather hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills than a more experienced candidate without them.

More than three-quarters of leaders say, with AI, early-in-career talent will have greater responsibilities, according to the report.

Changmi Jung, Carey associate professor of practice in information systems and the academic program director for the MS in Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business, says the world is on the cusp of the next Industrial Revolution, with AI poised to create new opportunities and significantly reshape the job market.

“This shift necessitates new skills for the workforce of the future,” she says. “Carey is at the forefront of preparing future talent for this transformation. With a strong focus on AI, our comprehensive curriculum offers in-depth knowledge of the cutting-edge techniques and tools in machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI, while also integrating essential areas such as management, strategy, AI governance, and the interaction between AI and the human workforce, ensuring students are ready to address ethical challenges and implement AI responsibly.”
