Berkeley Haas is founded on four Defining Leadership Principles: Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. Which principle resonates most with you and why? Of Haas’ four Defining Leadership Principles, the one that resonates most with me is Students Always. So far in my career, strategy consulting has given me the optimal opportunity to use my natural curiosity to consistently tackle new problems and understand new industries (e.g. remaking a PE firm’s corporate strategy, leading a cross-functional workshop for a company launching their first therapeutic to market, or running evidence planning for a series of oncology assets for a newly acquired company). As I head to Berkeley, I am excited to learn from my teachers, classmates, and guest lecturers.

What excites you about earning your MBA in the Bay Area? Having worked in the life sciences industry—and primarily for Deloitte’s Emerging Client book of business—I was drawn to the Bay Area because of the strength of the life science startups in South San Francisco and the thriving venture capital ecosystem in the city. I hope to integrate with and contribute to the Bay’s thriving healthcare ecosystem while at Haas and after graduation.

What was the key part of Berkeley Haas’ MBA curriculum or programming that led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? I chose Haas because I was accepted into Berkeley’s MBA/MPH (Master of Public Health from UC Berkeley, School of Public Health) program. The roughly 20 students accepted into this program each year are given the opportunity to take specific courses together to prepare to become the leaders at the intersection of healthcare and business.

What course, club, or activity excites you the most at Berkeley Haas? At Haas, I am most excited about courses like “Built for Growth” and ‘Bay Area Innovation and Entrepreneurship” that allow me to understand the startup ecosystem and how funding flows from finance firms to startups.

Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: I am most proud of leading a series of workshops to prepare our client to launch a rare disease therapy to market. Working with the head of the launch team to decide aspects of the patient experience allowed me to have a tangible impact on the longevity and quality of lives of our patients.

At this point, what do you hope to do after graduation? Whether continuing as a consultant or in finance, I plan to help healthcare companies commercialize early-stage innovation.

What advice would you give to help potential applicants gain admission into Berkeley Haas’ MBA program? Berkeley Haas values students who embody its four Defining Leadership Principles: Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. I encourage students who are interested in attending Haas to find instances in their personal and professional lives that exemplify each of these values. Because of this, many Haas admits are driven and accomplished, but the school maintains a unique culture where everyone is considerate of the impact they are having on the world around them.
