Przemysław “Przemek” Jeziorski, a distinguished professor of marketing at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, was fatally shot on July 4 while visiting his children in Greece. He was 43.

Jeziorski was reportedly attacked in the Athens suburb of Agia Paraskevi by a masked gunman who fled the scene. Greek authorities have now arrested five people in connection with the killing, including Jeziorski’s ex-wife, who is accused of orchestrating the attack, and her current partner, who police say pulled the trigger. According to ABC News, the shooting occurred as Jeziorski was visiting Athens to attend a custody hearing for his two young children.

“Our family is heartbroken, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that justice is served,” Jeziorski’s brother, Łukasz, wrote on a WhyDonate crowdfunding page established to support legal action and repatriation efforts. “Przemek was a loving father to two young children and a beloved professor at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.”

Berkeley officials have expressed shock and grief over Jeziorski’s death. “We are heartbroken by news of the tragic and sudden death of Professor Przemysław Jeziorski, a beloved member of our marketing faculty and Haas community,” said Dean Jennifer Chatman. “Our immediate focus is on supporting our community during this difficult period.”

Professor Zsolt Katona, a close colleague, added in a follow-up statement, “I have learned about the news that the Greek police made arrests in Przemek’s case. I trust that the investigators will continue to work diligently and justice will be served. At this point, our main priority should be to give all assistance to Przemek’s brother to ensure his children’s well-being.”

A SCHOLAR WITH GLOBAL INFLUENCE

Jeziorski joined Haas in 2012 and was appointed to the Egon & Joan von Kaschnitz Distinguished Professorship in Business Administration in 2018. Over the years, he mentored more than 1,500 MBA and Ph.D. students and taught core and advanced courses including Marketing Analytics, Choice Models, and Computational Methods for Economics and Marketing.

His research, spanning quantitative marketing, antitrust, fintech, and digital platforms, earned him international recognition. He published in leading academic journals including Marketing Science, Management Science, and the RAND Journal of Economics. Jeziorski held a Ph.D. in economics from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, master’s degrees in mathematics and economics from the University of Arizona, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Warsaw School of Economics. He also held academic appointments at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Arizona.

RESEARCH AT THE INTERSECTION OF ECONOMICS & MARKETING

Jeziorski’s work often tackled complex market dynamics through the lens of empirical industrial organization and quantitative analysis. In Marketing Science, his co-authored paper on mobile money in Tanzania offered critical insights into how digital payment systems take root in emerging economies. Another widely cited Management Science study on search advertising showed how ad prominence directly shapes consumer behavior — work that has shaped how platforms and advertisers strategize in digital spaces.

He also examined platform economics and merger policy. In the RAND Journal of Economics, he co-authored a paper on dynamic auctions with subcontracting that helped explain strategic bidding in complex contracting environments. Another RAND study estimated cost synergies in U.S. radio mergers, offering evidence on consolidation in two-sided markets and influencing antitrust analysis.

“Przemek was an outstanding scholar,” Katona says. “His research at the intersection of marketing and economics led the way in important areas from mergers and acquisitions to search advertising and mobile money. He had great influence on the marketing field, not only through his research, but his energetic presence and optimism combined with a healthy dose of skepticism.”

A FAMILY IN MOURNING

Outside the academic world, Jeziorski was also a co-founder of Keybee, a startup that manages short-term rental properties on platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Booking.com.

He is survived by his two children. The WhyDonate campaign launched by his brother had raised more than €55,000 toward its €95,000 goal as of Thursday, July 17.

“It’s hard to come to terms with this senseless tragedy,” Katona says. “Przemek was an amazing person, a friend, a colleague. He was a loving father of two young children and always there if someone needed help. If there is any consolation in these moments, it’s knowing the lasting impact that he left on so many people’s lives.”
