Description: Moat is fond of saying that ā€œhistory repeats itself.ā€ By collecting and analyzing a wide set of data, she argues that you can ā€œidentify patternsā€ and ā€œbetter forecast the future.ā€Ā  These days, people produce data by the minute, whether it is a purchase, a call, or an internet search. By connecting this data, everyone from policy makers to business makers can make better decisions. And this philosophy underpins this course, where students will examine how big data applies to healthcare, economics, transportation, and crime. For example, students will use data sets to measure traffic patterns, exploring how modifying variables can reduce congestion. In addition, students will learn how to ā€œwrite basic programs in R, create basic data visualisations and carry out simple analyses.ā€
