Interested in an MBA? Consider These Factors

How To Succeed At An MBA Fair

Attending an MBA tour or fair is a great way to learn more about a program and engage with schools that interest you. But how can you make the most of your time at these events?

Jennifer Jackson, an admissions counselor at Stratus Admissions Counseling, recently broke down how prospective applicants can prepare in advanced to succeed at MBA fairs.

PREP WORK

Much of your success at an MBA fair will depend on the amount of prep work you put in prior to the event.

Jackson says it’s helpful for applicants to spend time before an event to ensure they will make the most of their time.

“Make a plan in advance of which schools you plan to visit, and look at the schedule to see which panels or speakers are the most interesting to you,” Jackson writes. “For some events, you can schedule time with programs before the event, so take the time to research whether that is possible. You should dress in business attire so you look professional, and remember to bring several copies of your resume.”

Additionally, it can be helpful to prepare questions you’ll want to ask regarding schools of interest.

“Go with a specific question you can’t find in any website or article,” says Judith Silverman Hodara, former Head of MBA Admissions at Wharton, tells Forbes. “Not only does it demonstrate you’ve done some due diligence, you may be able to use the answer that you get as you begin to shape writing your essays later in the season.”

CONNECT

There will be hundreds of potential applicants trying to make a good first impression at these events. Experts say that to stand out, you’ll want to make an effort to connect with admissions officers—both during and after the event.

“Collect names and cards of any admissions officers from programs that interest you and keep them in your notebook,” Jackson writes. “Be sure to make eye contact, shake hands and introduce yourself. It is unlikely that adcom members you meet will remember you from a short interaction when they are meeting dozens or hundreds of other prospective students, so don’t try too hard to make an impression. You can use a follow-up note after the fair to get on their radar.”

FIND YOUR FIT

MBA fairs are set up to help you find a program that aligns with your interests and goals.

“Use these events to connect with the school and understand what its differentiators are,” Jackson writes.

On top of attending a fair, it’s important to also try and visit schools you’re interested in.

“Only when you’re on campus can you really get a feel for the place, people and culture that define each top MBA program,” Jackson writes. “MBA tours can help you narrow down a long list of schools but you still need to do specific research on the resources each MBA program offers and how they can help you reach your goals.”
