Top B-Schools For Sustainability?

not-easy-being-green-kermitThe Top 30 Business Schools For Sustainability

“It’s not easy being green.”

Kermit the Frog may have penned this ditty forty years ago, but b-school deans are the ones who are humming it now.

In September, Corporate Knights magazine released its first annual Global Green MBA Survey. The survey, which evaluated business schools on integrating sustainability into their curriculum, research, and student activities, ranked Canada’s Schulich School of Business at York University as the global leader.

This year’s survey was sent to faculty management personnel at the top 250 business schools in 17 countries (as measured by rankings compiled by The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, US News and World Report, The Financial Times, and Beyond Grey Pinstripes). According to Corporate Knights, three Canadian business schools (Schulich, John Molson and Haskayne) and two British schools (Exeter and Nottingham) made up the top 5. The United States had 11 business schools represented in the Top 30, with Duquesne ranking highest in eighth place.

The survey’s methodology measured business school performance in three areas.

1) Institutional Support: How is sustainability encouraged through programs like guest speakers, events, internships, scholarships, student competitions, community involvement, and faculty research?

2) Student-Led Initiatives: How are students exposed to sustainability through student and faculty groups and committees?

3) Coursework: How does the curriculum, including courses, degrees, and specializations, systematically integrate sustainability?

Corporate Knights, which reaches nearly 250,000 readers, including the CEOs of every Fortune 500 company, based its methodology on the Aspen Institute’s recently-discontinued Beyond Grey Pinstripes Report. However, Corporate Knights expanded its research beyond the Aspen’s Institute’s focus on coursework and faculty research to include student activities and community work.
