Iām a US Army officer looking to transition into consulting when I exit the military.
Additional Candidate Commentary: I know my GPA is the weakest part of my profile. Iāve attempted to help remedy this by earning my CORe through HBS online to demonstrate my readiness for the academic rigor of top MBA programs. Are there any other portions of my profile that I could strengthen before I begin the application process in 2022?

I hope to join an MBB consulting firm after earning my MBA.

Hi, it’s Nisha from mbaMission. First of all, thank you for your service! It sounds like you’ve had a very meaningful impact in your time in the Army. And, really I like your sense of balance, as shown through your community involvement and commitment to your family – we all should strive to be great to our loved ones!
While your GPA may be below the average for these programs, business schools will take into account the rigor of a biology major. And your above average GMAT score and your completion of HbX Core will certainly help offset the GPA, if you earned honors (and if not, you can consider an additional online course such as UC Berkeley Math for Management). While your GPA may be below the average for these programs, business schools will take into account the rigor of a biology major. And your above average GMAT score and your completion of HbX Core will certainly help offset the GPA, if you earned honors (and if not, you can consider an additional online course such as UC Berkeley Math for Management). In any case, I would write the optional essay to address the GPA in a way that shows ownership and responsibility, while mentioning any extenuating circumstances or hardships that you may have faced in college.
In your application, you’ll want to make it clear what drives your career goals – based on your experiences, interests, and observations to date, why do you want to do consulting post-MBA? What is the impact you want to make in that role and in the long-term (assuming you transition out of consulting at some point, as many do), and what are the skills you feel you bring to it? Since schools always want to know the WHY behind your ambitions, make sure to craft a narrative that makes it clear.
The schools on your list are very welcoming of military applicants, and I would also add Johnson to your list. I hope that this helps a bit – if you would like to discuss in more detail, please sign up for a free consultation. Best of luck!
Hi Mr. Army to MBB, Melisa here from Stratus Admissions. Thank you for your service! Youāve asked about strengthening your application in prep for next yearās deadlines – I love that you are planning ahead. As you have mentioned your GPA, one thing youāll want to assess is the overall quantitative abilities that you can highlight. Your GMAT score is definitely strong, along with your completion of HBX Core. These are going to be more recent indications of your quant abilities. However, if looking at your transcript from Notre Dame, if you did not do well in your quant classes there are 2 other levers you can pull. In addition to the Math for Management course from Berkeley (or UCLA) which would allow you to …
In addition to the Math for Management course from Berkeley (or UCLA) which would allow you to receive a grade for your work, you can identify and take on quantitative projects professionally. Identify and brainstorm your quantitative you’ve completed at work to date, and then identify what projects you could take on this upcoming year to grow those skills – budgeting, financial analysis, etc. As you are deciding who your recommenders will be, make sure they have knowledge of your quant work – and can highlight it in your recommendations. The other focus Iād suggest is digging into your personal story of what you want to accomplish with your career and why consulting is the right choice to get you there. Consulting is obviously something that Tuck (and your other schools) can prepare you for – and it is a common goal post-MBA. Think about how to bring out your personal motivations to make your story authentic and unique. And youāve talked about how important your family is to you – how does your family connect within your story. If you are still working through your āwhy consultingā, spend time talking with current students who are making this transition to consulting and ask them about their experiences and reasoning. Leverage the military MBA network to understand the paths that others have taken to see what might inspire you. Feel free to sign up for a consult if I can answer any other questions. Wishing you the best of luck through the process!
