I am a Big 4 technology consultant coming from a top engineering program. I am passionate about technology, specifically emerging technologies such as AI. I am looking forward to the many applications of technology in healthcare, and potentially starting my own company in the future. I am also interested in finance, specifically VC.

I am looking for weaknesses in my application, and want to plan for my future applications. My application dates are not set in stone, and I am willing to wait to maximize my chances. My gpa is a bit low due to extenuating circumstances (sick family member, traveled between campus and home often) and any advice on how to deal with this would be helpful.

It’s good to have a focus! This is Debbie Choy from mbaMission and GSB alum. Having a healthcare background myself, I think your skills in engineering and consulting will be very attractive to healthtech companies. While I think you have a lot of strengths in your profile, I do think waiting another year or two before applying to HBS would strengthen your application. Working at a Big 4 provides a solid footing – continue to focus on that as top business schools are looking for top performers. As well, do take the time to engage with community organizations outside of work. Volunteering at local community organizations can showcase your leadership skills, as well as help AdCom see different sides of you. AdCom is not looking for any specific type of organizations, so feel free to engage with professional or personal interest organizations that you’d enjoy volunteering for. As for your academics, do consider explaining the circumstances that affected your GPA in the optional essay. That said, your GMAT score is still a shade below the average at the most selective schools like HBS. Since you have time, consider retaking the GMAT. Or if you find yourself hitting a ceiling with the GMAT, look into the GRE. The study material is similar, but some applicants find the GRE test format more suited to their test-taking style. My estimate of your odds is based on applying now with a 720. But if you gain more experience under your belt and improve your test scores, your chances will improve.
