Hello Mr. Aussie Mining Specialist! I’m Krista Nannery, a Senior Consultant with mbaMission. You know, a few years ago I worked with someone just like you — from South Africa, not Australia though — and he was very successful in his applications. The only thing is…he had 4-ish more years of work experience than you. It can be really tough to get into Wharton with just one year of work experience. That 780 will certainly get their attention though — we don’t see that every day.

While I certainly wouldn’t discourage you from applying now — you’ve got to be in it to win it, right? — I would not be surprised if your applications at the top-top schools are not successful. I think your best bet is to wait until you have at least three years of work experience under your belt — ideally four — and then try. In the meantime, be the best employee you can be, build relationships internally, build your career, and keep up your extracurriculars.

Never say never but I agree with Krista that it will be hard for you to compete in Wharton’s pool given your short time in the workforce, and add to that that you are coming from a very tough demographic. So my 5% is if you apply now . But your stats are really strong and will certainly catch the eye of top schools in a few years, especially if you are able to show solid work performance. Why the rush? Use this time to position yourself well for when it’s time to apply and you will then be a very competitive candidate. Go after leadership roles at work and look …
