Turned down promotion with my current employer to an audit manager role in order to gain corp finance exp as a Senior Associate. Similarly, have turned down accounting roles with worlds largest search engine and social media platform that would double my pay. I see my patience as a big win – with the goal of getting as much pre-MBA experience as i can.
Leverage my existing experience and that gained through an MBA to transition into management consulting. Ultimately, hope to use this experience to work with operational NGO’s that support causes I am passionate about. | EDITOR’S NOTE: Get comfortable talking about what drives you. Hi Mr. Banking-to-Consulting, Julie-Anne Heafey here with mbaMission. I appreciate your thoughtful list of schools as well, along with your efforts to improve yourself and gain pre-MBA experience that aligns with your goals. Apart from a possible test retake, I encourage you to make sure you are getting specific about how your transferable skills translate to your new goals, and perhaps do some networking in your target industry to understand which firms/areas are right for you. I’m not clear on your long-term NGO plans – are you saying you would move from consulting to work at say a Red Cross or something? I’d take a close look at pathways from your current role into consulting and what comes after that; this plan …

I’m not clear on your long-term NGO plans – are you saying you would move from consulting to work at say a Red Cross or something? I’d take a close look at pathways from your current role into consulting and what comes after that; this plan sounds like it could be challenging to me (though I’m unclear on some of the details of your charity work and how that might translate, as well as what roles/places you are targeting). I’m not saying you can’t try to seek a dream role later on, but if plans sound unrealistic, admissions folks can hesitate…so either show your research/legwork in how you’ll make it possible, or stick to clear plans that make sense for the experience you’ve worked hard to build to date! Best of luck!
Mr. Banking to Consulting – thanks for posting your profile. Susan here from Stratus.
I like that you are shooting for programs where your stats align with the class profile! If you have only taken the GMAT once, I suggest that you retake to see if you can increase your score 10-30 points to balance out your softer undergrad gpa. (Note: if your GPA isn’t on a 4.0 score but you did a conversion for the purposes of putting something into this profile this may not be as important!)

I like that you have taken on a growth opportunity at work to develop new skills and knowledge in advance of business school. In your applications you will want to create a narrative that clearly lays out how business school followed by work as a consultant will set you up to work with NGOs. It would also be valuable to specify what social challenge(s) you are looking to address through your work – education, healthcare, sanitation? Specificity = credibility!
When presenting your sports as adding value to your profile, beware of them coming across as self-serving. Perhaps through golf you learned patience and focusing on the process to acheive your desired outcomes – showcase how you have leveraged this learning in the workplace. Perhaps in training for marathons you have tapped a community of like-minded peers to support each other.
Wishing you all the best on your MBA journey!
