A published academic with a heart for the homeless looking to take my analytical skills into the real world. I am hoping my leadership and community activity precludes the notion that I fear human interaction, which is something I realize might be concerning to programs given my background. I am concerned about whether my achievements are all that impressive in the realm of MBA admissions.

Consulting for biotech companies seems like the most reasonable trajectory, although I am open to anything. My mom said I had the “face of a banker” from the moment I was born- never quite knew how to take that.

Hi Mr. Brainiac, Well you’ve already ticked one of the important MBA Admissions boxes and that’s the sense of humour you need to approach this process. Or rather, your Mom has! Whether or not you look like a banker, I think your plan to target biotech companies makes sense, and you clearly have the genuine intellectual horsepower which top firms are seeking. That’s a fantastic GRE and a great degree to kick off your applications; I agree it’s quite niche in MBA terms – there aren’t that many neuroscience grads that take that route, but there are definitely some. To me, it looks like you might just bridge that really sought-after gap between super-smart analytics skills and the ability to translate data and build relationships. …
Hi Mr. Brainiac, Well you’ve already ticked one of the important MBA Admissions boxes and that’s the sense of humour you need to approach this process. Or rather, your Mom has! If you can convince adcoms of that type of capability, the MBA world could be your oyster but I do get your concern about looking too academic. I think that the extracurriculars you can point to – sailing, blues piano, running – and your understanding of key issues such as housing insecurity help mitigate this, as will your experience with a large government organisation. Berkeley Haas is a good shout, and if you want to cast your net wider I’d also encourage you to look across the pond and consider Cambridge Judge. They will be a big, big fan of your academic profile. Good luck, be confident in what your have to offer, and please do reach out for a free consultation if you’d like to discuss further.
