Mr. Classic Engineer

Hi Mr. Classic Engineer – it’s Liza from Gatehouse Admissions. As an MIT Sloan grad myself, I admittedly have a soft spot for anyone who targets Sloan as their 1st choice! And yet, my biggest piece of advice is going to be: make sure you consider other schools in addition to Sloan! Sloan sees so many engineering applicants; it’s incredibly challenging to stand out as one. Not to say you won’t be in the running – your GMAT is stellar; and while your undergraduate GPA is a little lower than they’d like, they’ll view the 4.0 from your Masters as proof that you can apply yourself and excel. What I can’t see as much of in your profile is whether you’ve used your engineering smarts to innovate, create, and improve or stepped up as a leader and team player. But even if you have these sorts of stories, the engineering applicant pool is so crowded at Sloan (and the acceptance rate so low!) that I want you considering schools such as Ross, Darden, and Kellogg – and your alma mater’s business school, Tuck. Any of these would enable you to dramatically expand your skillset beyond engineering. Just remember – in your application, make it clear how you’ve driven impact & change so the schools see your leadership potential. I’m rooting for you!
