Candidate:

Mr. Community Uplift

About Me:

I grew up in one of the most underserved communities in a major midwest US city. I went to a small community High School where I was fortunate enough to be introduced to competitive debate. I earned a debate scholarship to a public state university but graduated with a low GPA. I was not able to take full advantage of my college education due to family obligations I had back home. My mother has a chronic illness which required me to take on extra responsibilities during college for her care. I’ve since worked my way up in corporate finance, trying to master my craft and have been rewarded with increasing responsibilities. I am certified as a treasury professional (CTP), CFA, and CPA. I have also taken 16 post-baccalaureate courses, including 7 rigorous math courses from a top tier university since college and have a 3.92 (on 4.0) scale. I sit on a local community development corporation’s board of directors which focused on building affordable housing where I grew up and have been an active leader in the local democratic party. I am also a leader in my companies emerging leadersā€™ program. I plan to go back to business school to round out my business knowledge, gain credibility to progress in my career and explore paths to becoming an entrepreneur using ETA.

Let me just say right off the bat that I am really impressed by all that you have achieved. Your deep engagement in the community, your striving despite the odds against you, your high GPA in rigorous math courses at a top-tier university and your work experience speaks volumes about the person you are and the person you will become after you get your MBA. While your undergraduate GPA is obviously low, you have a very good reason for it and your GMAT and subsequent track record more than offset any concern a school should ever have about your GPA. Sure, you’re a little on the older side for the schools you are targeting but I also don’t think that is a hurdle, either. Based …
