If I were the head of admissions at Harvard Business School, I would take you in a New York minute. I love how you turned around your academics from high school to college. I love that you went to the University of Houston where many first gen students go. Your master’s degree from Rice along with your career as a data scientist for a Fortune 500 company are super impressive. What is not to like? HBS is an institution that especially loves people from elite institutions and Houston isn’t one of them. That is an absolute shame because you deserve to be at Harvard and worked harder to get where you are than many who will sit in their classrooms. We have written about this …
If I were the head of admissions at Harvard Business School, I would take you in a New York minute. We have written about this and here is what we found: Almost one in four members (23.2%) of Harvard’s MBA Class of 2020 boast an Ivy League degree, with Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford clearly in the lead. Some 46 members of the class, or 5.2%, had Harvard as their alma mater. Some 39 students, or 4.4%, earned their undergraduate degrees from Pennsylvania, while another 35 MBA students, or 3.9%, had gone to Stanford. Sure, HBS takes a flyer on a graduate from other schools but it’s one here and one there. I don’t want to discourage you from applying to Harvard because you truly deserve to be there. But I want to temper your expectations. Don’t believe the BS that admissions at HBS is based on a meritocracy. Good luck.
