Mr. English Teacher

About Me:

Graduate of a humble state university and public high school teacher of 4 years. As a teacher, I’ve been passionate about motivating students to push themselves and realize their potential, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. This past year, I also fulfilled my long-held goal to write, record, and independently release an album.

Undergrad Major: English, Secondary Education Certification

GPA: 3.78

GMAT: 680 (plan to re-take)

Age: 26,  Ethnicity: White

Work History:

Title: Teacher

Industry: Education

Company: Other

Length of Employment: 4 yrs

Big Life Wins:

In college, hand-selected by the dean of the Honors College to work as a research assistant to the school’s president. Since beginning my career in education, I have been responsible for teaching advanced level English classes. Additionally, I have progressed from teaching intermediate level classes to sophomores, to juniors, to finally seniors.

Post MBA Goal:

While my experience teaching has been fulfilling, I feel that I’ve progressed as much as I can in the field, and am hoping an MBA will help me challenge myself and continue to grow professionally. Post-MBA, I am considering pursuing a career in either educational consulting or a field in which I can leverage my experience and interest in the arts.

  • Gatehouse Admissions | Odds Assessment: 30%

Hi, it’s Rachel Nelson from Gatehouse. It’s great to see your passion for teaching and your interest in working with marginalized students. You will have a unique profile compared to most MBA applicants and it’s great that you are able to show progression in your field. Looking forward, I think the admissions committee will be looking to understand why you have an interest in educational consulting and why do you need an MBA to achieve it – can you demonstrate your passion again here so it doesn’t seem like you picked it randomly. I would be looking to understand why you aren’t going into educational administration with an MBA and so it may be worth exploring a field in the arts that …

  • Stratus Admissions Counseling | Odds Assessment: 30%

Hi, it’s Jennifer Jackson from Stratus Admissions. I think it’s a good idea to try a GMAT retake but a 680 isn’t super far off for Emory. You have a solid GPA but at a “humble” college so it certainly doesn’t hurt to try to score higher since that’s an area you can still control (unlike GPA). I think your experience in teaching will be a very good differentiator for you, as that’s not a common background for MBA applicants. Going into educational consulting is a good ST goal, but you’ll want to be very clear about WHY you want to do that. What have you seen in your years of teaching experience that you’d like to see being done better, that only an MBA …
