In college, hand-selected by the dean of the Honors College to work as a research assistant to the school’s president. Since beginning my career in education, I have been responsible for teaching advanced level English classes. Additionally, I have progressed from teaching intermediate level classes to sophomores to juniors.
While my experience teaching has been fulfilling, I feel that I’ve progressed as much as I can in the field, and am hoping an MBA will help me challenge myself and continue to grow professionally. Post-MBA, I am considering pursuing a career in either educational consulting or a field in which I can leverage my experience and interest in the arts.

Hi, it’s Rachel Nelson from Gatehouse. It’s great to see your passion for teaching and your interest in working with marginalized students. You will have a unique profile compared to most MBA applicants and it’s great that you are able to show progression in your field. Looking forward, I think the admissions committee will be looking to understand why you have an interest in educational consulting and why do you need an MBA to achieve it – can you demonstrate your passion again here so it doesn’t seem like you picked it randomly. I would be looking to understand why you aren’t going into educational administration with an MBA and so it may be worth exploring a field in the arts that …

I would be looking to understand why you aren’t going into educational administration with an MBA and so it may be worth exploring a field in the arts that leverages your background and experiences so that your why MBA rationale makes sense in the context of your short and long term goal. I would also be interested to hear more about the album you worked on particularly to the extent that it may ultimately tie into your ST/LT goals.
Your GMAT is solid but I would consider a retake particularly given your GPA / undergrad university but I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker. Also in your application can you be sure to highlight any leadership experiences you have had at work, perhaps with colleagues or students – the more you can bring to life the impact you have had (at work or outside) the stronger your application will be. I wish you lots of luck!
Hi, it’s Jennifer Jackson from Stratus Admissions. I think it’s a good idea to try a GMAT retake but a 680 isn’t super far off for Emory. You have a solid GPA but at a “humble” college so it certainly doesn’t hurt to try to score higher since that’s an area you can still control (unlike GPA). I think your experience in teaching will be a very good differentiator for you, as that’s not a common background for MBA applicants. Going into educational consulting is a good ST goal, but you’ll want to be very clear about WHY you want to do that. What have you seen in your years of teaching experience that you’d like to see being done better, that only an MBA …

What have you seen in your years of teaching experience that you’d like to see being done better, that only an MBA can give you the skills to help make those changes? I’m sure you have plenty of anecdotes, both from the classroom and administratively, that perhaps you could draw on in essays to help inform your goals. Then you’ll want to share a LT goal as well and share how the skills you’ll gain from consulting will help you be successful in that LT goal. Wishing you lots of luck with your MBA applications!
