Hi Mr. Enlisted Veteran, this is Kristen from MBA Prep School. Firstly, thank you for your service. Though your path has not been typical, it sounds like you made the most of every opportunity that has come your way, achieved some milestones in special ops, and brought a lot of value and experience to your undergraduate experience in the end. You deserve a lot of credit for being a first-gen college grad in spite of the obstacles you faced and the delayed timeline. I also really like your long-term goal to give back to others who faced similar challenges. I do think your GMAT will be a bit of a challenge for schools like Wharton and Stern, although your personal story and elite military role …

I also really like your long-term goal to give back to others who faced similar challenges. I do think your GMAT will be a bit of a challenge for schools like Wharton and Stern, although your personal story and elite military role MIGHT help them overlook it. If you think you could bring it up into the 700s, I would encourage you to retake it or attempt the GRE. I also agree you should consider what other firms might provide the same learning opportunity that you are hoping for at an MBB. Admissions Committees want to make sure you that you have a goal in mind, but also like to see some flexibility and a possible plan B. If you are only set on a certain elite firm, the school may fear that you won’t accept anything less and might present difficulties in the recruiting process. Would be happy to chat with you more if you have other questions!
Hi Mr. Enlisted Veteran, Thanks for asking for a profile review. This is Donna Bauman with Stratus Admissions and here’s my take on your situation. I’m impressed with your resourcefulness and maturity in finding a way to support yourself in college as a first gen college student. Working as a special ops helicopter crew chief also very impressive. I’m also impressed with your home flipping profits. I would not limit yourself to MBB for consulting—think also about firms where your military background can be a huge plus. I think all your schools in consideration set have potential. Stern may not like your GMAT but I think Yale or Haas or Fuqua or Columbia might be more willing to overlook that. For schools on west coast …

Reach out if you want to have more conversation around your background and thank you for your service! Kenan-Flagler and Darden and Cornell also very strong with military connections.
Great stats, although Stern (and Wharton) may not like your GMAT score very much. As a side note, be careful about over-inflating your already very impressive achievements. An aviator is technically a pilot or pilot in command of an aircraft responsible for everything that happens or fails to happen on a flight. From your description, it sounds like you were just a crew chief who manned a gun on a transport helicopter assisting the pilots and had maintenance duties. Admission committees consult their veteran club members to vet relevant resumes, and they will see right through that stuff. It can rub them the wrong way about truthfulness. Otherwise, very impressive, and good luck!
