Candidate:

Mr. French Tech

About Me:

I am a first-generation college student raised by a single mom in France. I became a lawyer before moving to LA.Ā
I got my master’s degree at USC and worked for a boutique VC firm before getting hired by a “no-name” startup. However, as head of ops and strategy, I helped grow the company from 5 to 120 employees, and from 0 to $40M in revenue.

Additional Candidate Commentary:
I “bombed” the GRE, especially the quant part that I took right before the round 3 deadlines. I still want to apply for R3 but I will definitely retake it if I am rejected from my goal schools.

2. Succeeding professionally in America, it is almost impossible to get sponsored for a VisaĀ as an immigrant.
3. Growing the startup from inception to exit.

Post MBA Goal:

I still want to work in technology, ideally in Edtech (I have a podcast about this industry), in ops and strategy but in a bigger company like Coursera or Masterclass. This is why I want an MBA.Ā

    Bonjour Mr. French Tech!
Your profile is certainly very differentiated for business school! This is Debbie Choy from mbaMission. I think you have a lot of strengths in your profile – personal background growing up in France and moving to LA (there must be a story there), growing a startup from 0 to 120 employees, leader within your community working with LGBTQ refugees. As you put your app together, be sure to articulate why you’re looking to pivot from law / tech into Education. What drives your passion in this area? Also, I agree with Susan that it’s a good idea to demonstrate your Quant chops. Taking some quant courses pre-MBA will demonstrate MBA readiness as well as convince AdCom that you have the foundation to …

Mr. French Tech – Thanks for sharing your profile. Susan Cera here from Stratus.

I really like your profile for MIT Sloan. I presume that you are taking advantage of the fact that you don’t need to submit a test score. However, I presume that as a law student, you may not have taken a lot of quant courses so you will need to present some evidence of your ability to handle the quantitative rigor of the MIT curriculum. This could be an additional course (mbamath comes to mind) or a recommendation that speaks to using your analytical skills as you grew the business as the start-up you were involved with.

Frankly, if you have found success in business operations at one technology company, I wonder why …
