Mr. Law To MBA

About Me:

Graduated with plans of becoming an attorney. Worked at a firm w/ roughly 15 attorneys as an assistant. I gravitated towards the operations and finance side of the business. I did well on some self-started billing-related projects and was promoted to Financial Director. Learned all requisite accounting etc. on the job. Currently supervise 1 person.

Undergrad School: UC Berkeley

Undergrad Major: Philosophy

GPA: 3.77

GRE: 321

Age: 23,  Ethnicity: White

Extracurriculars: Club Soccer, Operations Advisor to Past School Fraternity, Quarantine Mentor

Work History:

Title: Financial Director

Industry: Law

Company: Boutique Firm

Length of Employment: 2 yrs

Big Life Wins:

I helped create an automated billing reminder system and an online payment portal for our company. Sped up overall billing cycle by 33% by restructuring and reaching out to a software consultant. Recently, I changed the basis of our internal recons from a billable to a receivable basis and made calculations and reports as needed.

Post MBA Goal:

My goal is to become a strategy and operations consultant, generally speaking. More specifically, I would like to do Legal Function Consulting at EY or a similar company. In my time working here, I have learned about the operations side of law firms and departments — a recently salient topic in consulting– and I think I can be of value here.

Target School: Ross

Status: Open

Considering: Darden, Cornell Johnson

Your achievements helping to set up the billing and payment systems sound very solid, and would tie in nicely with your future career goals. Your academics are robust, and you are active in your community as a mentor. That said, if you have an opportunity to step up more within the community organizations you’re already involved with, I think that will help beef up your profile even more, and demonstrate more leadership. Beyond that, schools typically like to see a shade more experience, but if you continue on your career trajectory and beef up …
