Hi Mr. Tech Analyst, Thanks for posting your profile. This is Debbie Choy, GSB alum and Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I think your background in finance and engineering could certainly help you reach your long-term goal of social impact FinTech. In my 8 years of working with candidates, I see that candidates working in a differentiated function within finance can be very successful in their applications. For example, how has your role in the engineering department of a large financial firm shaped your perspective on how you might make saving and investing accessible? As you think about your essays, do share your unique perspectives so that the Admissions Committee (AdCom) recognizes what you can contribute to the classroom. Separately, your GPA could be a concern – consider explaining in your application the circumstances (if any) that affected your grades. Finally, most of the top US business schools prefer that candidates have a few years of work experience under their belt when they apply. Although your profile is solid, I think waiting another 1-2 years before you apply will allow you to demonstrate a track record of achievement at work. Also consider taking on community leadership roles to demonstrate even more leadership in your profile. AdCom likes to see leadership not just in college and at work, but also in your community. My estimate of your chances at GSB are based on your current profile, but I think if you continue doing well at work and in your community, you will have above average odds at GSB (where the average acceptance rate is around 6-7%) in 1-2 years. Wishing you the best in your MBA journey.
