Candidate:

Ms. Apparel Entrepreneur

About Me:

I work in merchandise planning/allocation. I’ve worked at two well-known, high growth companies – one in athleisure and one in menswear. I had a low GPA and haven’t hit my target GMAT yet, but I am a leader at work and have moved up the ranks quickly. My company’s founders met at CBS and are inspirations to me – I am pursuing entrepreneurship.

Also have been working virtually with other NYC volunteers to brainstorm re-opening plan & ways to assist clients virtually with resume & interview prep., Very active in local community: have been distributing pantry boxes to the elderly, picking up prescriptions for neighbors, and am now maintaining online database of all local businesses.

Length of Employment: 1 yr

Big Life Wins:

My boss went on maternity leave last year and I assumed many responsibilities, including leading the team. We run very lean so it was a challenging time. I’m proud of keeping my composure & making smart business decisions while being pulled 100 ways. I worked directly with the C-suite. I also interviewed, hired, and onboarded 2 reports during that time.

Post MBA Goal:

My long-term goal is to run my own apparel company. Not just another fashion brand, but ideally a product that improves quality of life and/or doesn’t strain resources (i.e. Allbirds, Everlane). Before that, I plan to intern & work at early-stage startups or E-commerce companies (Nike) with a marketing focus.

Hi Ms. Apparel Entrepreneur, this is Kristen from MBA Prep School. I think there is a lot to like about your professional progression, community engagement, and career thought process. Your work experience is unique but nicely focused with the combo of high-growth ventures and fashion/apparel. It sounds like you have had opportunities to stand on your own two feet and lead, which will make for great stories in your MBA application. Your volunteerism is also inspiring and I especially like that you are finding ways to be involved both personally and on behalf of your company. Your passion for social improvement, entrepreneurship, and the fashion/apparel industry is perfectly embodied in your career goal. It is realistic and well thought-out, and you have a solid plan …

Sure, your raw stats are a little low for UCLA but I like you and I bet Anderson will like you, too. I don’t know how many times you’ve taken the GMAT and I am sure you would hate to have to do it again (even if it is a second time and especially if it is a third or fourth time). But a nice round 700 will really help you and anything above that is obviously better. Your work experience at a pair of well-known companies and your accomplishments at each will bode well. And your extras are stellar. I also like your post-MBA goals and believe they are not only achievable at Anderson but they are goals that admissions would like as well …
