Hi Ms. International Technologist, Kristen from MBA Prep School here. You have an all around solid profile for Sloan: first-gen college student, woman in tech within finance, solid volunteerism and internal firm contributions. The humanities background shouldn’t hold you back given the reputation of your undergraduate institution and the fact that you’ve had exposure to quant concepts through your job or your family’s business (if not through core courses in undergrad). A few things to keep in mind. You want to showcase your professional impact in your current role; it’s awesome that you are leading the Women Network and Technology Lab but make sure you showcase both internal and external contributions. I think the transformation story of your family’s business would also be worth highlighting (I would not say listing a family business “helps” if you had a big impact on its success it is a sign of your capability). But you are absolutely correct that you need to weave this into a cohesive story, which can mean choosing the best experiences among a wealth of options. More isn’t always better!

Thanks for posting your profile. This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I think you have a compelling profile – with robust academics (GPA, GMAT), impressive work experience (with a promotion to VP to boot), and leadership roles with community organizations. Not to mention a first generation college grad and a woman leader in Fin “Tech”. To answer your question: I don’t think a humanities major / pre-med hinders your b-school application. Business schools love candidates from different backgrounds to add diversity and unique perspectives to the classroom discussion. As for listing your family business, I would recommend only doing so if it fits with your career goals story. Otherwise, you could list it as an “Extracurricular Activity” if you are indeed engaged, but it doesn’t have to be on the main stage with your career goals. Overall, I think you have a lot going for you and would have a strong shot at Sloan (where the average acceptance rate is around 11-13%).
