At the age of 53, you would make for an unusual full-time MBA student. At Tepper, as you undoubtedly know, the average age of an entering full-time MBA is 28, with an average 6.3 years of work experience. So I very much doubt that you will be accepted into the school’s full-time program. On the other hand, you are a terrific candidate to use the MBA experience at a launching pad for a startup. You clearly have the expertise in your field to leverage into a business. I think your best bet at Carnegie Mellon is the school’s excellent online hybrid MBA option. That would allow you to Online Hybrid students who have the ability to also take on-campus classes during the day. It’s important that you connect with the school before applying to gain full confidence that you will get the support to pursue a startup while in the program. This includes meeting with a professor or two who would ultimately be your advisor. I would NOT go to Tepper unless you are able to connect with a prof before hand and leave with the confidence that you will have a valuable partner to help you think through and launch your venture. There are many other business schools that would help you nurture your idea including business schools with strong reputations in the business of health from Johns Hopkins Carey, Vanderbilt Owen, and Washington University’s Olin Business School. These schools, moreover, may be more willing to admit someone of your age into a full-time MBA. I would seriously urge you to look at how these schools could support you in doing a startup in the business of health. My odds for you are for Tepper’s full-time program. If you apply to the online hybrid program, you should be guaranteed admission.
