The online MBA at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is looking for people who want to think globally, behave ethically, and lead innovation. “This three-pronged orientation is evident in the content of every MBA core class, in teaching methods, and in assigned activities,” according to the program’s website, and students will have opportunities to “practice using critical-thinking skills as you make strategic decisions in cases and projects. You will learn to negotiate and persuade while you develop your skills in project management. You will assess your own behavior and improve your ability to work in teams. You will be a leader.”
Students in the UW-Whitewater online MBA declare emphases from a list of 11 specific topic areas: human resources, data analytics, finance, international business, management, marketing, project management, supply chain management, IT management, environmental safety and health, or a customized emphasis. The program, tied for No. 28 in the 2018 U.S. News & World Report ranking, currently has 328 students, 97% of whom were employed upon enrollment, with an average age of 30. It has 35 instructional faculty, all of whom are full-time and tenured or tenure-track, with an average 10 years’ experience teaching online.
The 36-credit UW-Whitewater MBA can be earned entirely online and remotely, and usually takes between one and a half and three years. The three-year graduation rate is 79%. The program has only 11% minority students and 5% international students, and it’s strongly male, at 59.9%.

PROVIDING ‘THE MOST CURRENT INFORMATION’ The program has a 71% acceptance rate, with an average GPA of 3.3 and average GMAT of 504. New entrants boast an average of 50 months’ work experience. The typical course in the UW-Whitewater MBA requires students to log in five times a week, with the majority of courses requiring students to work collaboratively with other students. Students choose from 57 credit-granting courses. Those who begin the program with an undergraduate business degree start with a group of advanced graduate courses in functional areas like economics, management, technology, and marketing, “ensuring that you have the most current information and practices in those core areas”; those who don’t have an undergrad biz degree must take a set of “background courses” before beginning the program, and UW-Whitewater has advisers to help student determine which and how many.
In-state or out, the UW-Whitewater MBA costs the same: $638 per credit hour, or $22,968 total. A high percentage — 71% — of new students are employer-sponsored; for those who aren’t, college-funded aid is available. In 2016-2017, 32% of students graduated with some debt, at an average of $12,138.
