The MSU Broad MBA: What You Need To Know

Located in the vibrant town of East Lansing, Michigan, is the Michigan State Broad College of Business, which has been graduating MBAs since the 1960s. The Spartan community is said to be vast and supportive, and the Broad MBA ranked No. 1 for Supply Chain Management and Logistics by U.S. News and World Report in its 2023 ranking. Broad graduates often accept offers from neighboring city Detroit within the auto industry, with companies such as Ford, GM, and Stellantis.

Students have described Broad’s full-time MBA program as a home away from home, with small class sizes, a heavy emphasis on team-based work in the curriculum, and strong relationships between faculty and students. The program combines a theory-based curriculum with soft skills used for effective leadership and allows students to select one or two concentrations to craft their own plan of study, with electives that complement the concentration areas.

This year, the program welcomed 60 students. In a span of 21 months, Broad MBAs complete 61 credits in the usual core subjects, allowing for candidates to choose from five concentrations including Finance, HR Management, Marketing, Business Analytics, and Supply Chain Management. These can be personalized by studying electives in areas such as consulting, entrepreneurship, insights and analytics, data visualization, and global immersion.

Internships are highly recommended between a Broad MBA’s first and second year. Every year, Broad hosts experiential learning workshops for MBAs, where a company presents a business problem and students have 4 days to solve and present the solution — a great opportunity to practice all they have learned in the program.

Outside of the required curriculum, Broad students frequent tech treks and other professional development opportunities. Also popular at Broad is the Kesseler Team Leadership Lab, dedicated to leadership and team processes and the Supply Chain Laboratory, which simulates an end-to-end supply chain, looking especially at the way information flows along it. Students frequently participate in case competitions as well like the Forte Women’s Leadership conference.

Nearly one-third — 32.4% — of the Broad MBA Class of 2022 went into the consulting industry. Top employers were Kearney, Boston Consulting Group, GEP Worldwide, Deloitte, EY, and McKinsey & Company.

“We teach people to look at creative solutions to problems, there’s a roadmap for being creative in a business context. It’s important that every student has multiple opportunities to show what they can do in real environments and we do that across the 21 months of the Broad MBA curriculum,” says Managing Director of the Broad Full-Time MBA Wayne Hutchison.
