The George Washington School of Business MBA: What You Need To Know

The George Washington University School of Business Global MBA program attracts those who want the challenge to think innovatively right in the heart of Washington, D.C. where business and policy meet.

The GW Global MBA is a 21-month, full-time program consisting of 53 credits. Before the program begins, GM MBA students spend their first three weeks on campus in what the school calls MBA Runway – an orientation of the coursework, speakers, social activities, their fellow students, faculty and alumni, resources, and life in D.C.

In their first year, students take the required core courses in groups of 40-45 classmates, attending lectures, working on case studies and team projects, and participating in experiential learning opportunities.

Students have the F. David Fowler Career Center as a resource to help shape career goals and target companies of interest for summer internships. The Center has many services, including career fairs, company tours in D.C., and career treks to New York and San Francisco.

One of the highlights of the GW MBA is the nine-week experiential Consulting Abroad Program (CAP) that takes place toward the end of the MBAs first year. The CAP gives students first-hand experience in doing business abroad led by faculty who guide student teams through a consulting engagement for a global firm. After spending seven weeks in D.C. doing research and shaping findings, the teams travel to the firm’s home country for two weeks to deliver final recommendations to company leaders.

With the understanding of general business, and with either a summer internship or immersion abroad under their belt, GW MBAs focus on preparing for professional life after graduation their second year. They complete electives, of which there are over 200 at the School of Business, or they can take graduate-level classes offered through other GW schools or universities. They also take the three credits of tech and analytics electives. These courses provide a narrow focus on skills and topics in technology and analytics — two areas essential to the modern business world. Students will also complete a tech-focused, experiential course with a company in the Washington, D.C. area, to experience business at a local level.

“GWSB helped me develop a career path by challenging my conventional understanding of business, giving me access to esteemed faculty and staff members that cultivated my interests, and giving me access to professional networks that continue to guide my career path,” says past MBA Karima Morris Woods on GW’s site.
