Over a flexible 9-20 months, a Master’s in Taxation can be pursued through two pathways: one pathway is for existing Leeds undergraduates who want to complete their undergraduate along with a master’s degree, or another pathway offers a traditional master’s program for those who have already completed an undergraduate degree and seek to return to school. Through the two degrees, graduates strengthen and enhance their ability to interpret and communicate key financial, tax and operational information. To enrich the curriculum, several tax courses are taken at the Law School. Career pathways include opportunities in audit and assurance, risk management, consulting, and tax analysis and planning for public accounting firms and corporations. Opportunities for internships occur throughout the program.
Although the Master’s in Accounting does not specifically lead to licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), it is possible that the degree and the specific courses taken might count toward licensing requirements in some states. If one is planning to seek professional licensure as a CPA, it is strongly recommended that individuals contact the appropriate licensing entity (in most cases the state board of accountancy) in the state in which one plans to practice in order to seek information and guidance regarding licensure requirements. CPA licensing requirements, including the educational component of those requirements, are state-specific and differ greatly from one state to another. Each state’s board of accountancy can be found by visiting the website of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy
31 credit hours are needed to complete this degree. There are four required prerequisite courses prior to enrollment in the program if applicant does not have an accounting background – Intermediate Financial Accounting I; Intermediate Financial Accounting II; Income Taxation; Cost Accounting.
