Best part of the job: Meeting people from all over the world and realizing that despite the differences, we are all fundamentally the same and face the same challenges.

Worst part of the job: There is nothing that I hate, but grading is not my favorite part. I prefer the interaction of the classroom and giving academic advice.

Gonzalo Garland is a professor in the fields of economics in environment and business in emerging markets. His research specialties reside in the macroeconomics where he studies the economic effects of demographic changes. Garland is also an expert on financial crises.

His specialist knowledge of the economics of developing countries such as China, India, Brazil and Mexico, serve Professor Garland well in his role as director of external relations at Instituto de Empresa, a position which he’s held for seven years. Alongside his teaching and research, Professor Garland seeks to establish and expand IE’s presence in other geographical regions, particularly emerging countries that are quickly growing and becoming key players to the global economy.

Though he divides his time between teaching and his administrative duties, Professor Garland says teaching is in his blood. “”I like transmitting knowledge and being able to explain things that at first might seem difficult for people. But when they suddenly understand what you’re talking about and see the relevance, it’s very gratifying.”
