Blast from the Past:

The Online MBA Comes of Age

In 1981, MTV revolutionized the entertainment industry, rotating music videos no different than radio stations played records. Video never did kill the radio star. Instead, it broadened its appeal, launching new artists and driving new fashions and technical breakthroughs.

Online MBA programs are making a similar impact in business schools. While some may argue that they’re cannibalizing the full-time and executive programs, they’re actually expanding the student pool. Instead of leaving their jobs – or trekking to campus on evenings and weekends – online students can learn on their schedules. More important, they can apply what they learn immediately. Mind you, there are tradeoffs. Some employers still consider an online degree to be “MBA Lite.” And they’re still behind their full-time, on-site cohorts when it comes to networking and clubs. But online students are no longer afterthoughts. The degree has more prestige than ever. And the choices available to online students continue to grow.

So what’s behind their booming market? How are the top programs making the virtual space more like the brick-and-mortar one? What lessons have online programs learned? And what limits do they still face? For the answers, click on Poets&Quants’ in-depth report on how online MBA programs have stepped out of the shadows and into the educational mainstream.
