The Future Of Leadership Is Digital—and Shaped By Artificial Intelligence
As companies navigate the complexities of climate change, resource scarcity, and technological evolution, artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a key force in shaping the future—enhancing efficiency, driving innovation, and redefining the way we work and live. For future leaders, understanding AI and digital technologies is no longer optional—it is essential.
As an institution, we recognized early on the pivotal role AI will play in the future. “At ESMT Berlin, we never use technology for its own sake, but always with the goal of making learning more effective and accessible,” explains Nan Guo, Director of Digital Innovation and Transformation. At the same time, we take responsibility for not only preparing students to use technology but also teaching them how to apply it ethically and sustainably.
Practical AI Application Infused Into Thorough Academic Input
We are committed to ensuring that AI education is not just theoretical but deeply rooted in real-world application. We bridge the gap between cutting-edge academic insights and industry practice, empowering students and professionals to drive AI-powered transformation within their organizations.
The Master in Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (MAAI) program exemplifies this approach. It offers a unique blend of data analytics, AI, and management education, enabling students to shape their studies according to their career aspirations. Alongside developing proficiency in AI tools, software, and automation, students broaden their business understanding through courses in Global Corporate Management, Innovation, and Finance. Their learning journey is further strengthened by practical seminars led by industry experts, equipping them with the skills to implement AI-driven solutions effectively in complex business environments. Students are gaining practical experiences during the program, such as Javokhir Jurakhodjaev, MAAI student, who spent his transformative internship with the Data Quality and Business Intelligence team at Bloomberg: “I learned how to work in a cross-functional team and take product ownership,” he shared. “This experience marks a milestone in my data science career.”
Our Executive Education programs extend this practice-oriented philosophy to professionals, helping them turn AI knowledge into measurable business impact. Programs such as AI for Managers and AI at Scale provide participants with the tools to navigate the evolving AI landscape with confidence. AI for Managers, developed in partnership with Merantix, delivers hands-on AI insights tailored to managerial needs. Reflecting on his experience, André Lux, Head of IT Europe at Dayton Progress GmbH, remarked: “Great overview of AI technology – every theoretical part is manifested by practical work.”
AI at Scale, delivered alongside leading European partners appliedAI and Rewire, takes AI implementation further. appliedAI supports organizations in scaling AI solutions, while Rewire guides businesses in embedding AI across operations and developing critical capabilities. These partnerships ensure that participants leave with both cutting-edge knowledge and practical expertise to lead AI transformation within their companies.
Combining academic rigor with industry relevance, ESMT ensures that our graduates and executive participants emerge ready to shape the future of AI-powered business.
AI As An Integral Part Of Education
We endeavor to integrate AI into all our programs where it can enhance learning and provide targeted support to students. One example is the introduction of a GPT-based tool tailored to course content. This tool answers students’ questions in real time, complementing traditional teaching with personalized learning support.
Besides improving the learning process, developing practical AI skills is a key focus. The AI Pioneer Program encourages staff and students to experiment with AI applications and expand their knowledge. Workshops and online courses on AI help executives and early-career professionals dive deeper into topics such as data analysis, machine learning, and ethical AI use.
Responsible Use Of AI: More Than Just Technology
In addition to technical expertise, we place great importance on the ethical dimension of AI. “Our students and staff should not just be consumers of technology. They should also reflect on how to use technology for the greater good,” says Nan.
As an example, students at ESMT are combining their tech skills with social responsibility during their Social Impact Projects and as participants of the Responsible Leaders Fellowship program.
The question of ethical AI usage is ever-present. Through courses, discussions, and workshops on responsible leadership, students learn how to balance business and societal interests. Technology alone does not guarantee progress—it must be used wisely and responsibly.
ESMT As A Pioneer In Digital Education
At ESMT, we are pioneering digital education in Europe. By combining technology-enhanced learning, hands-on projects, and interdisciplinary research, we prepare future leaders to meet the demands of a complex, technology-driven world. Since 2018, our Learning Innovation Lab has been a launchpad for digital learning transformation, creating online MBA programs and an impressive library of digital content. This is the foundation to offer participants the opportunity to engage in high-quality learning formats regardless of time or location.
We are also the forerunner in introducing immersive technologies into the learning experience. In one of our virtual reality simulations called Mission in the Snow, built by faculty member Nora Grasselli, and our Learning Innovation Lab, participants engage in realistic scenarios that promote hybrid leadership, agile practices, and collaborative work in a connected world. This innovative learning environment provides a safe space for experimentation, allowing students to develop their creative and analytical skills further. The combination of technological and didactic innovation ensures our learning experience is impactful and enduring.
“Our mission to empower people to create a better tomorrow is closely linked to our goal of strengthening competencies in AI and digital transformation,” summarizes Nan. Students and leaders who want to rise to this challenge will find the perfect environment at ESMT to develop their potential and help shape the future.
