Hi Ms. Ambitious Tech, this is Kristen from MBA Prep School. There is so much to admire about your background and career goals. No doubt you’ve gotten to experience the challenges of entrepreneurship within high-growth startups; it sounds like you have some solid leadership accomplishments, but you will want to bring out the details for your MBA applications so admissions officers can see how you had an impact or brought about change and what type of leader you are. Your dedication to community service provides some differentiation to your candidacy and shows that your career aspirations are not a passing interest, but a passion. You will want to be sure to define how you see yourself achieving that goal, both in terms of short-term steps as well as in what each specific program will offer you that will enable you to get there. All that being said, you have a few challenges to overcome. Your Wellesley background is definitely an asset in the application process; your sociology major brings a unique perspective to the table, but may also raise questions about your ability to handle rigorous quant work. Did you take any quant classes in undergrad? An MBA Math prep course might also help allay concerns. In addition to your GPA being on the lower side of average, your GRE is also a bit below the mean score for some of the higher-ranked programs on your list. You’ll need to emphasize strong work experiences to counteract some of the weaker aspects of your profile. I’d be happy to offer you a complimentary consultation to talk more about how you might do that. I believe your odds are better for Yale, Duke, and Rice, and you might also consider Cornell or Michigan.
