What You Need To Know

If you want a truly unique global MBA experience, the Asia School of Business is a sure bet. The school hosts a partnership between MIT Sloan and Bank Negara Malaysia, the country’s central bank, and has won accolades such as being one of the most innovative MBA programs in the world today.

There’s no better way to learn and experience international business than by immersing yourself in one of the world’s most diverse melting pots. The school is situated on the central west coast of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur and provides opportunities to experience diversity in Asian culture, food, geography, and lifestyles, with everything from sun-kissed beaches to one of the world’s oldest rainforests located a few hours’ drives away from the city.

ASB was founded in 2015 by the Central Bank of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia), in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management. The MBA program at ASB borrows heavily from MIT’s pedagogy of Action Learning, with Mens et Manus. Over the last 8 years, ASB has obtained recognition from Poets&Quants as one of the most impactful b-school innovations of the decade for its heavy emphasis on practical, real-world learning within industries and organizations across Asia, and remains committed to delivering a world-class MBA.

Academics And Programs

During the program, students learn from visiting senior faculty from MIT Sloan alongside ASB residential faculty, with access to business coaches and renowned leaders and experts from various fields, who are committed to engaging with and cultivating a global community of leaders who will make a positive impact on Asia and the emerging world.

The past seven classes have had around 40 students each, 70% of whom are international, with women making up over 40% of the class. The ASB MBA programs include a 12-month MBA program and a 16-month Executive MBA (EMBA) program.  A significant proportion of the curriculum for both programs consists of required experiential learning, which ASB takes a unique approach to.

Borrowing from MIT’s philosophy of Action Learning, an innovative approach that accelerates learning through repeated, hands-on practice, ASB students partake in four major action learning opportunities at the B-School.

The first is an optional industry trek, where students explore their industry of interest in United States, China, or the United Arab Emirates, the accelerated one-week Business Practicum where the whole class tackles key business challenges for a the host organization, a semester-long Group Project, where groups of three to five people deep dive and apply their learnings to a clearly scoped-out project for their host company, and finally an individual six to eight week Summer Associate Program applying the Action Learning approach to address the needs of a host organization.

These experiential learning opportunities translate to students rapidly developing tangible skills that are transferable to new industries, arming them for their post-MBA goals and career pivots. To date, ASB alumni work in some of the globe’s most recognizable companies. These include leading AirAsia, Amazon, Grab, LEGO, McKinsey, Samsung, Uber, Novo Nordisk and Microsoft.

According to the Career Development Office, the Class of 2022 placements resulted in PPP-adjusted salaries that would rank 75th in the world in the 2022 Financial Times Global MBA Rankings (Financial Times, 2022). Furthermore, the ASB MBA degree has proven to be globally portable, with this class of 48 accepting offers or pursuing personal career goals in 15 different countries.

“ASB is full of potential business opportunities, both within its own community as well as its robust ecosystem of corporate partners and Action Learning hosts…One of the most useful courses for me was in negotiation. I learned how to prepare for negotiations using a systematic approach, one I now use for negotiating share disputes and contract terms in my business…Additionally, the Disciplined Entrepreneurship course gave me a better sense of direction for the company through utilizing Bill Aulet’s 24-step market validation framework. The list goes on and on. My MBA has been a life-changing experience for me. ASB is an extraordinary and unconventional school where we can design our own goals and experiences. This is my MBA, and I believe this could be your MBA too” says MBA Michael Chin on ASB’s website.
