The Melbourne Business School MBA: What You Need To Know

Melbourne is often called the world’s most livable city. With a population of almost 5 million, hundreds of top-class restaurants, and 40 beaches nearby, it is certainly a buzzy and attractive place to live – and the city offers students more than a pleasant experience. The campus itself is just four tram stops from the city center.

Being close to Asia, the University of Melbourne intakes a good portion of international students. Half of their incoming class this year was international students. Possibly the most interesting thing about the business school’s two-year full-time MBA is a hugely diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives. About one fifth of students come from Australasia and half from Asia, while 15% are from the U.S. and around 5% are from Europe.

The B-School’s goal is to shape leaders who are experts in collaboration and inclusion. Students finish this MBA with a variety of hands-on experiences, working with international and diverse teams, which are hugely attractive skills to employers.

MBS’s full-time MBA is a flexible yet academically rigorous two-year program. Students have the option to exceed two years to allow time for exchange opportunities and to allow time for career development. The program is structured into 8 terms, with core courses front loaded primarily into the first and second term. Terms three through seven have a few core courses but are mostly reserved for immersions, internships, electives, and exchanges with any one of the B-School’s more than 50 partners. Term eight is reserved for the capstone, and career coaching is available throughout the entire degree.

Many MBAs with a large percentage of international students offer a launchpad into their own country, but the proximity to Asia means that MBS is a springboard to many other countries, too. With over 8,500 alumni working in 95 countries, Melbourne should certainly appeal to people who want an MBA to help them change location.

“Studying an MBA definitely gave me a lot of knowledge, but more than that, it built me into a more competent person. It gave me confidence and changed my presence,” says MBA Susan Yang on MBS’s website.
