In my current job I am newer to business than most of my colleagues. Inexperience and bad luck led to me being ranked behind many others and being passed up for a promotion. Instead of focusing on my frustrations, I made plans to master my role. My next quarter’s results were some of the best on my team and more importantly, my personal best.
Managing people is something I enjoy, so my plan so far is general management. Since my unconventional undergraduate studies included only general business classes I am also excited to use my MBA experience to explore other fields. I have a young family and we are happy to live and work in boring places outside of the typical NYC jobs.

Hi there! It’s Stephanie Horn, Master Consultant with the MBA Exchange and recent Poets and Quants “Top 10 Admissions Consultants”. Mr. Geography Techie, I love your self-deprecating humor, which will fit in well in a midwestern school like Kellogg or Ross. BYU has a great track record for top-tier schools and you have a strong GPA and GMAT score. I don’t know if your undergraduate degree included a lot of quantitative courses — you may want to take a course over the summer to improve your profile. Your interest in diverse cultures fits in well with current business school trends — I hope your work experience has included working in diverse environments. I know it can be hard to do extracurriculars when you have a young family, but I encourage you to follow some passions, whether they be charitable activities or other organizations, and find a way to make an impact. You have a lot of the ingredients for a winning application — you just want to finish off the list.
Hi Mr. Geography Techie, this is Julie-Anne Heafey at mbaMission. Wow, it’s not every day that we see such maturity and self awareness in an applicant. I have a feeling that your odds are very good, especially with your unique story and great GPA and GMAT. Given your work setbacks that luckily seem to be behind you, my only concern is about recommendations, but hopefully your current supervisor will sing your praises and you can find a strong secondary recommender as well (though at Ross you only need one!). I love Kellogg for you, I’d also encourage you to check out Tuck. Given your goal of general management, your global mindset, and your interest in a family-friendly, non-NYC community, …

Hi Mr. Geography Techie, this is Donna Bauman, Senior MBA Admissions Counselor with Stratus Admissions, weighing in on your profile. Congratulations on a very strong GMAT score and undergraduate record. It looks like you also bring some interesting global experience. I would focus on your best results when explaining your story—but don’t be afraid to share a failure and what learned from this as all MBA programs are looking for candidates with self-awareness. I would love to have some time with you prior to the MBA applications to help you refine your career goals a bit more so that you can articulate how Kellogg can help you reach your goals. There are lots of opportunities to leverage your tech background to move to product management if that is an interest. Kellogg has an active Partners group that would be good for your family to know about as well. Beyond Kellogg I encourage you to look at Fuqua, Ross, Tuck and possibly UNC Kenan-Flagler. If gaining a big scholarship is also a goal then I think this is possible if you build this into your admissions strategy. Reach out if you would like to discuss further—but overall I think you have a lot to offer many MBA programs!
