Hi Mr. Aerospace Defense Engineer! Well, if I’ve ever seen a ‘late bloomer,’ it’s you! Geesh, I wish that 2.48 GPA had an extra point on it and if so, my rating for you would be on the other side of the hurdle. A nomination for Black Engineer of the Year is no joke – congratulations! Your work experience is differential and strong and your peers will benefit from learning from you. I’m extremely intrigued by your experience in Japan as well! It’s too bad that that experience took away from your extracurriculars, as lack of community involvement appears to be a significant vulnerability in your profile based on what you’ve shared so far.

On the other hand, it sounds like you have strong endorsements coming from highly respectable recommenders – you should lean-on that! I encourage you to engage your recommenders in your entire MBA Admissions campaign in a way that ensures they know their clear and distinct role in the process. What strengths are you able to convey in the pieces of the application that you own and what strengths (or maybe more importantly in this case) and vulnerabilities can your recommenders help you to overcome in their letter? Getting clear on this distinction and involving your recommenders along the way will be key for you.
Lastly, I encourage you to apply sooner vs. later, as time is ticking before AdCom questions your fit with the standard two-year MBA and you may need to start considering alternative MBA paths (exec MBA, certificates, etc). Let’s go! š
