Post MBA Goal:

Thoughtful planning is one of the most critical elements to a business school application and it sounds like you are on top of that already. Here’s what adcom is going to love about your profile: (1) your global experience will demonstrate your ability to work with folks very different from you (2) Your leadership demonstrated by your on-campus activity and (3) your initiative by founding your own NGO and managing a portfolio. Your graduation plans are crystal clear, but make sure that you have a backup plan in case the Gates Foundation doesn’t end up working out (since the 2+2 program does rely on securing a job right out of undergrad). Your post-MBA goals in Africa are also unique, which will help your application to stand out. That said, your GMAT score will be working against you. Since you still have another year, I truly believe your time would be very well spent in studying for and taking the GMAT again to at least get to Harvard’s average of 730, but ideally even 5-15 points higher given Indian applicants tend to have a stronger competitive set they are up against (in terms of standardized test scores). You could also consider trying the GRE, where the equalized scores at top programs is generally lower than that of the GMAT (by as much as 20 points at some of them). However, the GRE tends to be most favorable to those who don’t score quite as well as quant on the GMAT (which may not be your case given your background). Get that score up and keep doing what you are doing and I think that would easily increase your odds to more like 30-35%!

In addition, it looks like you’re a strong student leader. Schools are always looking for leaders who jump in to organize for example fundraisers, events, and so on. Your academic track record also appears robust, although since you have time, I suggest retaking the GMAT to try for a higher score – the closer you can get to the HBS average of 730, the more competitive you would be. When you apply to the 2+2 program, keep in mind that the Admissions Committee is looking for all of the above qualities – plus ideally a full-time job offer. Since you wish to work for the Gates Foundation, I recommend starting to look into how you might get a job there when you graduate, and what type of roles would be a good fit for you. Also don’t be afraid to look into other NGOs beyond the Gates Foundation. HBS is not just looking for brand name employers. It matters also what your role will be. Good luck with the process!
