Started career at an LDP for a tech company and then switched to a strategy role at a tech public unicorn (Airbnb, Lyft etc). I’ve always been passionate about social impact, and volunteer a lot outside of work. Founded a non-profit, but have had difficulty making it larger scale/more impactful, especially during COVID. A lot of my work has been presented to the CEO and used for investor calls. Created analysis using novel way of segmenting data that is being used as the new forecasting process for the finance team. Two months into current job, the director for our business switched teams and asked me to switch with him and continue working on his new team.
Work in consulting (preferably social impact focused) and after getting a few years of experience, run my own non-profit. I hope that an MBA and a few years WE as a consultant will help me learn the skills (and gain the network) I need to run a successful non-profit.

Hi, Mr. Tech to Social Impact, this is Julie-Anne Heafey with mbaMission. I like what I’m hearing about your impact on the job where you are, and the fact that your boss has brought you along with him in his new team speaks volumes about your work. I’m curious about your pivot, and wonder about the model for turning your nonprofit side gig into a success. Columbia can be pragmatic about next steps, so I think you’ll want to be clear about your goals with sharp reasoning for how the CBS MBA will help you with your short and long term goals. Ultimately, I think a tight story and clear passion will help you find success. Consulting is a …
Consulting is a common next step for MBA applicants, but research the options well because a focus on social impact can be hard or impossible to attain depending on the firm — competition is stiff and it tends to be a reward assignment at some firms you have to “earn” first. I’d do some networking to find out how it works. Perhaps if you brought a desirable skill for something tech related to the table, you might find more opportunity at certain firms, but I’d do some legwork to find out. FYI if you took your GMAT recently and feel like you could boost it further, it might be worth it to retake; while a 740 is a good score, your GPA is a little low, and CBS can at times focus closely on stats. I like your profile but I have a few questions as mentioned above, so I’m going to rate your chances at around 2x the likelihood for an August entry candidate. Best of luck!!
