I am an adaptive and flexible leader, able to synthesize and communicate complex information. In my 13 years as an Army officer, I have gained considerable experience preparing and briefing high-level decision-makers, including General Officers and Members of Congress, and executing high-visibility assignments with minimal guidance or oversight. My experiences as a HR director for an organization of 4,600 personnel, Army instructor, and company commander taught me the unparalleled value of teamwork and mentorship, and the importance of strong, decisive leadership. Iāve been consistently evaluated as the top 5% performer in every position Iāve held and selected for additional responsibilities outside my professional scope. In my current position as Senior HR Director for a Brigade Combat Team of over 4,600 personnel, I restyled delivery, tracking, and execution of readiness metrics, bringing ranking from 25th to 1st of 37 similar units. I was selected by over 30 peers to command the brigade rear-detachment element of over 1,000 personnel for 2 months, receiving accolades from multiple General Officers for superior leadership during COVID pandemic. Unique in my military career, I was 1 of 20 Active Duty Army Officers selected to serve as Defense Fellow to the US House of Representatives. This opportunity allowed me to work with other government agencies, military services, and allied and partner nations, increasing my understanding of the security landscape from multiple perspectives. I served one year in the office of a Member of Congress, where I drafted legislation, prepared floor speeches and multiple hearing packets, and communicated complex DoD information and problems to the Congresswoman. During the two year utilization, my primary duty was to work with my 57 assigned Congressional offices and dozens of committee professional staff members in the House ofRepresentatives, to provide decision-makers timely and accurate information on Army programs and policies that directly affected defense legislation. Additionally, I planned, organized and executed over a dozen multifaceted House Member and Staff trips across the US and internationally to further Member and staff understanding of the Army, DoD, and US security policy, and served as OIC for several high-profile events on behalf of the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Army. In addition to those schools listed, in June of 2018, I participated the UC-Berkley Strategic Broadening Seminar Program. This experience increased my understanding of challenges facing the current and future force, and facilitated interaction with academia, technology, business, and community leaders to discuss the importance of agility, acceptance of failure, velocity of developing ideas and inclusiveness to maximize the potential of a community. I am pursuing an MBA to gain insight into non-military leadership styles and strengthen my skills and in analytical analysis and solution development.

On the personal side, my biggest life win is my wonderful family. I’ve been married for 12 years and have two children. While I expect to be an outlier in the applicant pool for most programs, I think this will be an asset to me and my cohort, bringing a different perspective to discussions and decisions.
Immediately Post-MBA I will serve as an instructor at the Military Academy at West Point in Leadership and Management, followed by an assignment as the HR director for a Division of over 18,000 personnel. Long-term, I am pursuing a career in strategic personnel management within the military, with a focus on talent alignment and productivity.

Ms. Active Army HR, I’m Lisa Cummings of Stratus Admissions. As a military Mom I understand and appreciate the sacrifices you have made over your career – thank you. While your stats are super solid, and your experience has been impressive. your years of work experience will be a hurdle for you in most traditional 2 year MBA programs. Are you considering any EMBA programs? High numbers of years experience raise a concern about a candidate’s employability post degree. While that seems off the table for you since you have a post degree plan set- that does raise the question of why MBA? Are you considering any EMBA programs? High numbers of years experience raise a concern about a candidate’s employability post degree. While that seems off the table for you since you have a post degree plan set- that does raise the question of why MBA? While I never want to discourage anyone from pursing higher education is an MBA really the right program for you? Columbia and other schools have classes in HR or access to HR programs elsewhere on campus but have a much more general management focus. But, have you thought about a MS degree in HR or in Industrial and Labor Relations? Assuming you are targeting traditional 2 year MBA programs you will really need to hone in on why you will need the degree, not only for your teaching stint at West Point but then beyond because as written it is hard for me to see a connection between an MBA and your goals. Make that very clear. I have given you odds of 10%, at other types of programs that number would be significantly higher. Best of luck to you in your pursuit of a degree.
